One day, my mother and I decided to rummage through all of the family photos we have under the stairs. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. One hour turned into three weekends of sorting, organizing, and bouts of exclamations that included “aww“ or “wait, who is that?” The photos below are ones that I personally found impactful to me. The quality of some of the photos we found were from the 19th century, nearly crumbled to dust, but to see an image of a great-great grandmother that resembles you, creates this shift within you that creates a connection to your heritage. These photos represent the love I have for my family and the connection to certain locations where my family has set roots and memories. I originally started colorizing old photos just for fun as an undergrad to see what my grandfather, who passed before when my mother was a toddler, looked like in color. The look on my mother’s face when she saw the rose in her father’s cheeks inspired me to continue this project. I hope you find the same warm feelings that I feel while observing these photos.
